1. Demographics
  • Most populous city in the US with 8,491,079 residents according to the 2014 census.
  • Approximately 40% of the state’s population is concentrated in NYC.
  • Population density is estimated at 26,403 people per square mile, and in Manhattan density is at 66,940 people per square mile.
  • Due to its status as a traditional immigrant gateway, Cultural diversity is a hallmark of the city. About 36% of the city’s residents is foreign born from many different countries. Top sending regions include Central and South America, China and Russia.
  • Besides the foreign born population, there is large ethnic diversity. The city boasts having one of the largest African American communities in a US City, large Chinese, Korean, South Asian, Latinos, Puerto Ricans, Jewish and South Asians residents.
  • It is estimated that there are xxxxx languages spoken in the city.
  • High levels of income inequalities. In 2005, average income in high income census tract was $188,697 and $9,320 in the lowest income census tract. Economic trends show rapid growth of high wage earners and stagnant wages for middle and low income wage earners.
  • The number of children under the age of 5 in Manhattan has grown by more than 32% since 2000.

2. Environment

2.1.Environmental Conditions (Natural & Human)
  • According to New York city government, 6% of annual death are attributed to environmental pollutants.
  • Having an extremely high density creates high demands for services, products and mobility challenges.
  • Millions of stationary and non-stationary sources (transportation) of greenhouse gas emissions cause a major environmental threat to the city.
  • Emissions from buildings and construction are a substantial source of air pollution in New York City.
  • Protection of water quality of the New York Harbor is critical. This entails improvements in sewage water treatment and continuous monitoring of water quality.

2.2. Political Environment
There is a strong regulatory environment in New York City and a greater level of collaborative governance at the city level. The city released PlaNYC in 2007. It represented a “unified strategy to bolster economic development, improve the environment, and better the quality of life for all New Yorkers”. The plan’s goal is to “achieve the cleanest air quality of any big U.S. city” by the year 2030.

3. Health
According to New York State Department of Health, adult residents of NYC had higher asthma prevalence and higher asthma emergency department visits, hospital discharge and mortality rates I 2009-20011 than residents of the rest of the state. In 2009-2011, the Bronx had the highest rates of asthma emergency department visits and hospital discharge rates than any other are of the state.

4. Education
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Office of Education provides K-12 students and teachers with a wide range of free programs and resources about the City’s vital water supply, wastewater treatment systems, sound and noise quality, and other environmental concerns. 5. Transportation
New York City has a very complex transportation infrastructure system. It includes a mass transit, one of the largest systems in the world, taxi system, bus system, a large networks of airports. There is low car ownership and high level of use of public transit system.
