  • This report is the result of a project by the TxDOT to assess the impact of the Panama Canal expansion on Texas ports and landside transportation systems. This assessment was made through the work of the Panama Canal Stakeholder Working Group, formed by TxDOT.

  • Katherine Turnbull is the Executive Associate Director of Texas A&M Transportation Institute. She served on the Transportation Research Board, which produced a group publication assessing the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program. Her research interests include transportation planning, public transportation, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) facilities, and transportation policy.

  • In 2012, TxDOT initiated a research project to assess the oppurtunities associated with the Panama Canal Expansion, as well as to assess potential impacts. Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) was retained by the department to assist with the project, and the Panama Canal Stakeholder Working Group (PCSWG) was formed.
  • A series of meetings, lead by the PCSWG, were held in order to communicate with port stakeholders such as shippers, carriers, ports, industry groups, and other organizations.
