What is the main point and the purpose of the article?

The main point is to illustrate that younger people now take more important part in American environmental protection. The article uses 3 examples of students around 18 who assumed an active role in resolving air pollution problems after had been victim of the problem or empathize for affected group. I think the purpose of the article is to encourage students in China to take more active parts in environmental protection and also it suggests that the government and organizations should value and support these behaviors.

Does the way the article is written encourage you to take sides on the issue? Explain.

By listing examples of people of my age group in America, the article encourages me to think that younger people is more important in environmental movement than ever before. The article references the word from Robert Bullard, director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University, which estimates that there are more than 1,500 youth environmental organization, up from only a handful 20 years ago.

List the sources the author(s) use to support the claims on air pollution (i.e. scientific evidence, expert, government official, citizens, etc.). Provide names and short descriptions.

I find that this article used the exact same examples from one article written by ANNA KUCHMENT on newsweek.com (Link: http://www.newsweek.com/young-activists-clean-their-urban-environment-87719). Except some minor differences (title, first paragraph and etc.), the article is almost the exact copy in Chinese of the article mentioned above.

What bias did the author bring to the writing of this article?

How (if at all) are health disparities, or other equity issues addressed in the article or report?

The article mentioned “A 2005 analysis by the Associated Press of EPA figures found that black Americans are 79 percent more likely than whites to live in neighborhoods where industrial pollution is suspected of posing the greatest health danger.” It also uses the example of Marisol Becerra in which “she helped a local organization map and inventory the atmospheric toxins of 150 blocks in her Mexican-American community” to illustrate the young people endeavor to address health disparities between racial communities.
