The World Trade Center attack of 9/11 had an unprecedented environmental impact on Lower Manhattan. Roughly 10,000 New Yorkers have suffered short-term health ailments from 9/11. Another issue came from the fact that the EPA failed to detect hazardous particles from the collapse. These particles included asbestos, lead, mercury, and crystalline silica, all of which are known to contribute to cancer or respiratory illnesses (Manuel, John).

Hurricane Sandy caused the outdoor air quality to become a concern; after the flooding occurred, sediment deposited by the floodwaters in the city streets and sidewalks, which is kicked up by foot and vehicle traffic (Manuel, John). Water pollution was also a major concern after Hurricane Sandy because raw sewage spilled into homes in Baldwin and East Rockaway, New York.
