National Geographic: National Geographic Society is an international brand known for their popular magazine for 125 years. The society has recently expanded their channel partnership with Fox to include the society. This was a controversial move that is not completely relevant to the project, but is to addressing bias when profiling an organization.

2. What have they done – through research, or a public health program or education forum, for example-- that illustrates how they have worked to improve air pollution governance and environmental public health?
The research out of National Geographic continues to stay relevant with global issues and news. Therefore, in recent years National Geographic has had an environmental focus touching on everything from China’s air quality to fishing regulations and ocean protection. Due to the scope of the brand, as a media organization National Geographic has an international influence on governance through publications read internationally. In this system, this would be a case of press influencing policy makers.

3. What timeline of events illustrates how this way of addressing environmental public health has developed?
The launch of Nat Geo Wild in China in 2006. More recently, the mission revisions currently in the works will have a focus on public health and environmental preservation.

4. Does this person, group or organization claim to have a new or unique way of addressing environmental public health? Does this approach point to or suggest problems with other approaches?
This group has an evolving way of addressing environmental public health. Because they are a media outlet, their methods have remained somewhat constant but the technology for distributing that media has changed drastically over time. When National Geographic focuses on environmental health, their aim is to provide an honest full story void of political skew or bias influences.

5. What data have they collected or used to support their approach to environmental public health? What visualizations of this data have been created?
A few noteworthy visualizations would be acquired documentary series such as BBC’s “Planet Earth” and Showtime’s “Years of Living Dangerously”. Both compelling and influential films that focus on environmental health.

6. What research has the organization produce or drawon on in their initiatives – in the last year, and over the last decade?
Over the last decade they have published research articles addressing alternative energy, natural disasters, and air quality in an effort to raise awareness to environmental issues.

7. What kinds of technology and infrastructure do they rely on in the production of environmental health care?
The infrastructure is based on a multiplatform distribution model that gets their content out to the world across a variety of audiences. Whether it be magazines in Brazil or Nat Geo People in Southeast Asia, their distribution system uses a variety of platforms to spread awareness on environmental issues.

9. What events or data seem to have motivated their ways of thinking about and engaging environmental health?
The emergence of global warming and climate change into household conversations definitely played a role in the Environmental focus of National Geographic.

This is where Fox becomes relevant. Before the merger, National Geographic Society was operating as its own entity gaining funds through donations, magazine revenues, and research/ exploration grants. While that funding is still a primary part of their budget, the introduction of Fox definitely plays a financial role.

National Geographic has historically be known for factual articles. When it comes to environmental health they hold their work to the same standard.

12. What does this person, group or organization seem to find methodologically challenging or concerning in dealing with environmental health?
When it comes to environmental health, the primary concern for National Geographic is awareness. Their reach is vast, if they cannot make people aware internationally they have failed their goal.

13. What kinds of governance are (implicitly or explicitly) called for in the way they think about environmental health?
In terms of governance, National Geographic research is used more as a point of reference when pushing policy and regulation.

14. How can The Asthma Files enable or supplement this way of thinking about environmental health, and the work of this person, group or organization?
The Asthma Files can really gain insights on content distribution from National Geographic. If the aim of The Asthma Files is to make others aware of public health issues around asthma, then the National Geographic model of content organization, research funding, and distribution is a perfect reference point.
