OFFICIAL DATA AND DELIBERATE MISREPRESENTATION OF AIR POLLUTION
In a series of articles from 2011 to 2014, the US consultant Steven Q. Andrews analyzed air pollution data and common practices adopted by the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and the Beijing Environmental Monitoring Center to misrepresent air pollution situation.

'Beijing hazardous blue sky'
In this article from 2011, Andrews explains how Beijing official data had a misleading approach to the air pollution assessment.
Problems include not reporting ozone and particulate matter (PM2.5) and understating the severity of pollution in the index.

'Official air pollution data in Beijing still failing the public'
This article from 2012 explains the concerns of Beijing's air quality index trial version and its related real-time data. According to Andrews, discrepancies with US embassy in Beijing data and peer-reviewed studies undermines Beijing official data.

'China's air pollution reporting is misleading'
In this article from 2014, Andrews shows how China's official AQI despite informing levels of PM2.5 and ozone, persists to describe the levels of pollution inaccurately. Although scientific evidence shows the health risks of exposure to these pollutants, China's AQI defines hazardous levels as 'light' or 'moderate'.
