Environmental Defense Fund

1. The Environmental Defense Fund, which is a United States based non-profit advocacy group, is being profiled. This profile is vital to my research because this group is a key partner in the effort of making New York a Sustainable 21st Century city.

2. The Environmental Defense Fund has partnered with New York City in the hopes of promoting clean heat in order to minimize heavy heating oils. This effort helps New York City buildings switch to the use of heating fuels that are cleaner and more cost-efficient. Natural gas, as well as ultra-low sulfur No. 2 oil (with biodiesel blends), are two examples of the cleaner fuels used. This work has promoted collaboration with Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration, which brought about rules phasing out No. 6 oil by 2015 and No. 4 oil by 2030.

3. This way of addressing environmental public health is very much brought about by the significant amount of people with heart and lung diseases in New York City.

4. The EDF claims that their approach to addressing environmental public health is different from what has been done in the past. According to them, their approach is different in the sense that it works across many different disciplines to solve problems. This approach suggests problems with other approaches that may be failing to target the many possible attributes making this significant impact in the environment.

5. In order to support their approach to environmental public health, the EDF has collected data on the importance of climate protection, protecting wildlife, as well as saving energy.

6. The EDF has conducted research to draw onto their initiatives. For example, with regards to the effort to slow down the pace of climate change, they have collected data on key states, where methane standards should be passed; they have made a point to investigate which natural gas supply chains are in need of methane leak fixes. Additionally, the EDF collected data on China in order to assist with their pollution problem; the data they’ve collected from China, as well as China’s government, is allowing them to assist the nation in decreasing emissions and lowering pollution in the manufacturing division. Also, the EDF has collected data on the topic of deforestation and fertilizer pollution in order to bring about more sustainable land use.

7. In the production of environmental health care, the EDF relies on technology. Specifically, with regards to targeting the methane leaks, EDF researchers have partnered with Google Earth Outreach. In order to perform tasks such as quantifying the natural gas leaks under streets and sidewalks, specifically equipped Google Street view cars are needed to make pollution visible to the public. In addition, the EDF is highly dependent on their scientists, who are the ones tracking and conducting research on prominent issues that require further attention.

8. The social ecology that the EDF works within is that solutions that foster the flourishing of people and nature are in fact possible to come by. This idea has shaped the EDF’s way of conceiving and engaging asthma because they have been able to not only identify the increased rate of asthma in NYC, but to relate this issue to the many different disciplines that they investigate—one of those disciplines being health, and the positive impact that safer chemicals and cleaner air can have on people.

9. One of the pieces of data that seem to have motivated their ways of thinking about environmental health is their research on Latinos, who they have found to be three times as likely to die from asthma than any other racial group. In addition, with regards to NYC specifically, the EDF found that soot pollution was the cause of more than 3,000 deaths every year from lung and heart disease. Thus, these are a few of the events encouraging the EDF’s work towards the betterment of environmental health.

10.EDF receives 54% of their support and revenue from contributions and membership, 40% from foundations and other institutional giving, 2% from government and other grants, 2% from bequests and other planned giving, and finally, 2% from investment and other revenue. The large amount of contributions from membership, and well as foundations and other institutional giving, can have both a positive or negative impact on their way of thinking. If the contributions and foundations supporting the EDF are actually in support of addressing public health issues rather than their own personal profit, then yes, these contributions will positively influence and, maybe even push, the EDF into implementing the necessary environmental public health efforts. However, if the support is coming from companies that are solely looking to protect and boost up their businesses that are actually contributing to the issue of environmental public health, then their contributions may negatively influence the decisions of the EDF— especially if a lot of money is coming from those particular supporters.

11.The EDF’s interest in climate, oceans, ecosystems and health, has likely shaped the way they conceive and engage in environmental health. As shown through their work, they tackle the issue of environmental public health through the use of many different disciplines rather than solely focusing on one.

12.With regards to the things that the EDF seems to find methodologically challenging or concerning in dealing with environmental health, further research and possible interviews are necessary for the answering of this question.

13.The EDF has demonstrated explicit governance in their implementation of California’s Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32), defending EPA climate change protections from polluter attacks, supporting the European Union Aviation Directive, as well as reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation.

14.The Asthma Files can enable or supplement this way of thinking about environmental health by coming up with ways to educate NYC school children about this large and important topic.

National Resources Defense Council

1. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is being profiled. They have an involvement with Beijing, which is one of the areas of interest in The Asthma Files research. Therefore, this profile will allow for the comparing and contrasting of the types of efforts made by the NRDC in New York City and Beijing.

2. In an effort to improve air pollution governance and environmental public health, the NRDC has been dedicated to promoting clean energy, protecting our health through the prevention of pollution, and working to foster sustainable communities.

3. This way of addressing environmental public health has developed as a result of the threat of pollution and corporate greed to the nation’s people, resources and wildlife.

4. With regards to addressing environmental public health, the NRDC claims to be striving to create an entire new way of life that can be sustained without harming the resources on earth. They also seem to stress the importance of making these advancements with regards to long-term changes that can be seen in future generations.

5. NRDC has collected data on asthma and air pollution. They looked specifically at particulate matter, ground level ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide in order to better understand how asthma is being triggered in people. This collected data has allowed the NRDC to understand which days people should actually look out for, which emphasizes a method that provides people a way to limit their exposure to air pollution.

6. In the past year, the NRDC has worked on banning toxic chemicals in food packaging, solar power to schools, empowering people to protect themselves from fracking, reducing carbon pollution from power plants, and appliance efficiency.

7. With regards to the technology and infrastructure necessary for the NRDC’s production of environmental health care, further research and possible interviews are essential for the answering of this question.

8. The NRDC works within a social ecology that centers on acting as a protector of the Earth, people, plants, animals, and life’s natural systems. This social ecology has allowed the NRDC to see the relationship between air pollutants and the many different aspects impacting life, which includes asthma.

9. The fact that roughly 25 million Americans are impacted by asthma attacks, and more than 3,000 of those Americans die every year in the United sates, seems to have been one of the factors that motivated the NRDC’s ways of thinking and engaging environmental health.

10.The NRDC is one of the most well funded environmental activist organizations around. They received millions from the Energy Foundation, $1.7 million in 2011 from the SeaChange Foundation, hidden donations through other “donor-advised funds”, as well as funding from many traditional liberal foundations.

11.The immense growth in the population of New York City, as well as the environmental consequences that were brought about as a result, were most likely some of the factors that influenced the way in which the NRDC conceived environmental health. Further factors would require interviews with NRDC representatives.

12.With regards to what the NRDC finds challenging or concerning in dealing with environmental health, answers from a representative of the organization are necessary. However, one could assume that it is extremely difficult to fight for a cause when a large portion of the audience refuses to acknowledge that cause, believe in its importance, or actually make a change in their lives. It’s easy to support a cause from afar; however, when that cause becomes etched in one’s own personal life, it turns into a foreign and impossible concept to grasp.

13.The kind of governance this is called for with regards to the way that the NRDC thinks about environmental health requires many explicit laws and policies. In this topic, there is a great need for laws and policies that leave absolutely no room for interpretation or doubt.

14.The Asthma Files can enable or supplement this way of thinking about environmental health by coming up with ways to educate NYC school children about this topic.
